The Whidbey Island Democratic Club promotes democratic values by bringing island Democrats and liberal-minded voters together for social and educational events.

WIDC was formed in 2003 to build social connections and educational opportunities for Democrats on Whidbey Island.

WIDC is not a Political Action Committee, but a club that invites Democrats and like-minded people to participate in our political process.

Our colleagues at INDIVISIBLE wanted to share the message below:

NOW is the time to SPEAK UP!

Let our Senators and Representatives know business as usual isn't acceptable. Urge your friends and relatives in other states to contact their members of Congress. Here are some suggested scripts. With our senators, let’s urge them to #FreezeTheSenate while the power grab continues – using blanket opposition, quorum calls and objecting to unanimous consent. You can find details and talking points from Indivisible here, and toolkits for organizing group visits to senators’ local offices here.

Other tips from a Senate staffer on what works:

1) The best thing to be heard is face-to-face time e.g., go to their town halls. Visit their local offices. Ask questions.

2) But, since in-person events don't happen every day, the most important thing that people should be doing is calling your senators and your Representative.

3) Online contact isn't as effective . . .Calls are what congress people pay attention to. Each day, Senior Staff and the Senator get a report of the 3 most-called-about topics for that day. (Note: It's said that Republican callers generally outnumber Democrat callers 4-1.)

When you call:

1) Pick 1-2 specific things to focus on.  Even if there's not a vote coming up in the next week, call anyway. It's important that they just keep getting calls.

2) Be clear on what you want — "I'm disappointed that the Senator..." or "I want to thank the Senator for their vote on... " etc.
